Collagen and Keratin ~ Hair Growth ~ Vitamin C

This page needs more work.  It is very difficult to sort through the technical information on this subject. So, I'm still working on this page, and any updates will be posted on the home page.  Biotin is also a another nutrient for healthy hair growth.  A little later, I'll set up a page for Biotin.

The cells that make up hair and nail tissue originate in and receive support from healthy collagen fibers in the skin matrix.  As the hair and nail cells accumulate, the interior of each cell is slowly replaced with keratin, a protein very similar to collagen.  We know from decades of research in humans and animals that supporting collagen metabolism with diet and exercise can help support the process of nail and hair growth "from inside" -- by supporting the early steps of collagen and keratin formation.

Collagen and Keratin

Collagen and keratin are fibrous proteins.  Collagen is the structural protein of connective tissues such as skin, muscles, and bone.  Keratin is the structural protein found in hair and nails. Dermatalogical Diseases : A Practical Approach

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, known as Ascorbic Acid, is an essential nutrient for humans.  An essential nutrient is required for normal body functioning that cannot be made (synthesized) by the body...

Humans cannot make Vitamin C.
Vitamin C is required to make collagen !!!

Vitamin C is required to make collagen.  Collagen is a fibrous protein, a main component of connective tissue.  Without collagen, your body will fall apart.

Vitamin C deficiency results in scurvy.  Scurvy is a disease infected by sailors and pirates for failing to eat perishable fruits and vegetables during long excursions.  The British Navy began using lime juice in 1795.

Linus Pauling (Feb. 28, 1901 – Aug. 19, 1994)

Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel laureate and research chemist, was a proponent for high intake of vitamins.  In 1970, he published Vitamin C and the Common Cold (soft cover).  Linus teamed up with British cancer surgeon Ewan Cameron in 1971, and published Cancer and Vitamin C.

Matthias Rath (born 1955 in Stuttgart, Germany)

Matthias Rath, MD, joined Linus Pauling at Pauling's research institute in California.  Dr. Rath claims that low-grade scurvy causes a number of cardiovascular diseases.  Living with low-grade scurvy, blood vessels will crack and bleed. The body will respond by filling the cracks with anything available, causing arterial blockage.  Dr. Rath published the following...

The average diet contains enough vitamin C to prevent open scurvy, but not enough to guarantee, reinforce artery walls.  As a consequence, millions of tiny cracks and lesions develop along the artery walls.  Subsequently, cholesterol, lipoproteins, and other blood risk factors enter the damaged artery walls in order to repair these lesions.

How Much Vitamin C ?

Please, consult a healthcare professional before doing any of the following!!!  I am not a licensed medical doctor, and prohibited from diagnosing and prescribing.  Otherwise, I would receive a very-nasty letter from the government lol lol.  BUT, under the Fair Use provision, I can quote the following authorities...

If humans could synthesize their own vitamin C, the amount synthesized daily might be between 2800 mg and 20,000 mg.  Vitamins and Minerals Demystified  by Steve Blake, (pg. 58)

Some healthy people might tolerate only a couple of grams (2,000mg) of vitamin C but, when physiologically stressed, that tolerance might increase 50 fold, or even 100 fold.  Vitamin C: The Real Story: The Remarkable and Controversial Healing Factor, by Steve Hickey, (pg. 71)

My basic suggestion for vitamin C use is about 2 to 4 grams per day with a typical active and healthy city lifestyle.  Based on previous levels in our native diets, Dr. Linus Pauling feels that the optimum daily levels of C are between 2,500 and 9,000 mg.  Clearly, requirements for Vitamin C vary and may be higher according to state of health, age (needs increase with years), weight, activity and energy levels, and general metabolism.  Stress, illness, and injuries further increase the requirements for ascorbic acid.  many authorities suggest that we take at least 500 mg of C daily to meet basic body needs.  Staying healthy with nutrition: the complete guide to diet and nutritional Medicine, by Elson M. Haas, Buck Levin. (pg. 144)

What mammals cannot make their own vitamin C?
Man, apes, monkeys and guinea pigs.

WEB NOTES

Sulfurs containing amino acids are some of the things that help stimulate keratin production.

: Peptides stimulate keratin genes which fortifies the hair into longer and thicker lashes

Skin is thickest on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, and thinnest on the eyelids. Constant pressure on any part of the skin can stimulate keratin formation and cause thickening of the area into a callus. It is made up of two layers - the epidermal and dermal layers.

Androgens stimulate keratin production

Biotin has been proved to stimulate horn production, and to lay it down at a faster rate, not only in the coronary band but also in the laminate...
